Upcoming: Perception Lab

Saturday, Nov 21 · 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM CST

The Coffee Shop NE
2852 Johnson St NE · Minneapolis, MN

The experiments behind every chart, rebuilt live.

We'll replicate the classic experiments of visual perception as applied to data visualization — rebuild them as tiny web apps, try them for ourselves, and compare what we find with the published results. Coders and non-coders both welcome.

The Zöllner illusion: long parallel lines crossed with short hatching that makes them appear to tilt

The Zöllner illusion (1860): every long line in this figure is perfectly parallel.

A judgment that bends under crosshatching, like the Zöllner lines above, is the same judgment you trust when you read a slope across gridlines or a small gap between two tall bars. Knowing where the eye fails, and by how much, is how you design charts the eye can't be fooled by.

Full details soon — RSVP on Meetup.

Hope to see you there!
