Past Event: Claude Code for Data Visualization — May 23rd

AI-assisted coding is changing how visualization practitioners prototype, iterate, and ship. In this hands-on workshop, we'll get you up and running with Claude Code — Anthropic's agentic coding tool — and put it to work on real dataviz problems. No prior experience with AI coding tools required.

Whether you're deep in D3, grinding through ggplot2, or somewhere in between, you'll leave with a working setup and a concrete sense of where Claude Code fits (and doesn't fit) in a practitioner's workflow.

Location & Logistics

  • When: Saturday, May 23 · 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM CDT

"I don't know what the AI-enabled future looks like, but the last time I felt this excited by the potential for creating (almost) anything I could imagine was when I learned HTML as a teenager in the mid-90s.

The ability to bring a visualization, dashboard, or analytic pipeline to life nearly instantaneously is a game-changer for conveying knowledge and insights. We still need humans to conceptualize these visualizations, dashboards, and pipelines so that they are meaningful and useful to others, but the technical barriers that have prevented us from telling maximally compelling stories with data have been massively reduced."

Workshop Prompts

We'll build a D3 multi-line chart of Metro Transit ridership from scratch, prompt by prompt:

  1. Prompt 1 — Sketch
  2. Prompt 2 — Get something on screen
  3. Prompt 3 — Fix the first thing that's wrong
  4. Prompt 4 — Add the pandemic context
  5. Prompt 5 — Make it interactive
  6. Prompt 6 — A judgment call Claude can't make for you
  7. Prompt 7 — Ship it
